Why Igbos May Remain Politically Irrelevant in Nigeria

Written by Uche Igwe
I took advantage of the break caused by the postponement of the elections to visit a few places in the South-East and South-South zones and directly gauge the perception of the people about the current political developments in the country. The first place was my village in Mbaise, then my mother’s village, both in Imo State. After going to my state, I joined one of my close friends to pay a courtesy visit to one of the riverine villages near Yenagoa in Bayelsa State.

Interestingly, some grass-roots politicians showed up during both visits and I took the liberty of the two visits to discuss Nigerian politics with both sets of people – my kinsmen and the kinsmen of President Goodluck Jonathan. During my discussions, it was obvious that President Jonathan has more supporters in Imo and other Igbo-speaking states than even in his home state, Bayelsa. Surprised?

Let me state two things upfront...
The first is that contrary to the views expressed in some quarters, I do not dislike President Jonathan, at least not his person. My concern is about his style of politics and governance and his performance as President and how these two factors affect me and my generation. As a southerner and an academic, I should connect with him. If he performs brilliantly as President, I will share in his success and such performance will brighten my chances and those of other members of my generation to one day decide to lead our country. The same way today I am sharing in his mistakes. So, the stakes before us are clearly beyond whatever thing I feel about his person.

80% of people who advise me have nothing to say – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has declared that more than 80 percent of his advisers have nothing to say. He stated this in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, at a special funeral service for eight female politicians and their driver who died in a road accident on February 14.

Jonathan stated this in reaction to Governor Seriake Dickson’s disclosure that he was advised against organising a state burial for the deceased.

Jonathan said, “I was surprised when the governor said some people asked why state burial. I told the governor that more than 80% of people who come to advise you have nothing to say, but just listen to them.

“From my experience as a deputy governor till today, more than 80 per cent (of advisers) have nothing to say, but you listen to everybody and do what is right for our people”.

Describing the day of the accident as a black day which coloured the landscape of Bayelsa with the worst colour, the president said, “We are here today because of the sad event of February 14. Of course, we lost eight of our best.

“To me, it is not just that people have died, not just that Bayelsans have died. But these are people I know too well. These nine caskets contain the remains of people who were dear to me, people that touched me in one way or the other.

It revolves around a literature student, Anastasia Steele, who meets a handsome but tormented billionaire named Christian Grey, whose sexual desires are channeled to dominance (BDSM).
'Fifty Shades of Grey' was also banned in Kenya.

Why You Should Try Standing On One Leg

Can you stand on one leg without falling? If you can, you should be happy and if you can not, well, try to work on your balance.
According to a study published in the journal Stroke ,being unable to stand on one leg for more than 20 seconds was linked to an increased risk of 'silent' stroke - tiny bleeds in the brain that don't cause symptoms, but which raise the risk of both full-blown stroke and dementia.

The ability to balance on one leg is an important test for brain health,' "Individuals showing poor balance on one leg should receive increased attention, as this may indicate an increased risk for brain disease and cognitive decline...says Dr Yasuharu Tabara, associate professor of genomic medicine at Kyoto University, Japan, who led the research.

53-year-olds who could stand on one leg for ten seconds with their eyes closed were the most likely to be fit and well in 13 years' time. However, those who could manage only two seconds were three times as likely to die before the age of 66.

How to Test your balance

So, how good is your balance? To find out, take this test, based on a U.S. study published in the Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy.
The researchers measured how long, on average, different age groups could balance on one leg for in order to establish what might be considered 'normal'.

To do the test, time how long you can stand on one leg, with your arms resting on your hips. Stop the clock when your raised foot touches the floor or your other leg, or you have to lift your arms off your hips to steady yourself - then compare your results with what's considered 'normal' for your age.

Photos Of How A Woman Was Saved After Her Car Plunged Into Water

A woman is extremely lucky to be alive after her car drove off a rock wall of a car park and into a harbour and began sinking, Dailymail reports. The petrified woman was squashed up against the rear window as the front end of the car was submerging in the Waitemata Harbour in Auckland at 3pm on Tuesday.

But two quick thinking policemen dived into the water to save her, one attempting to break the glass with a baton, before the second officer broke the glass with a rock pulled from the water, and alas the woman was saved. Brilliant men!  See more photos from the accident after the cut.

If Buhari wins Jonathan, I'll escape from Nigeria —Bode George

It seems Bode George is not in the mood to be friends with Bola Tinubu, politics or no politics. The old man said he is very sure Tinubu will call for his arrest once APC takes over the Presidency:

Why did the military surround former Governor Bola Tinubu’s house?
If Bola Tinubu finds his way into national government, I will go on exile. He hasn’t the temerity and the calmness of mind. They don’t even know what to do in power. Because the vice-president is his boy, he will just order that Bode George should be picked up.

He said soldiers came to him but he must have been dreaming. When he said soldiers had surrounded his house, I drove down there because my house is not too far from there. I know the hierarchy of the military and its behaviour. That they surrounded his house is lie number one because on either side of his house are two buildings. There is also one at the back. So, I wondered where the soldiers were hiding. Why would you lie for public consumption? So when I got down there, I knew that his spin doctors were working. These days people go on the social media and the story went viral.

Why would he (President Godluck Jonathan) from Abuja, be running after Bola? Let them be very careful about the statements they are making. More so, if Obasanjo is now linking Jonathan with what happened in Cote d’Ivoire and coup; not in this 21st Century. That is past and gone forever. No nation goes through this kind of tribulation twice and survive. We have had our own experience of Civil War and I pray that God does not direct our minds in that direction and our people have to watch their mouths.

Revealed: Secret Conspiracy To Rubbish The 2015 Elections

The conspiracy to scuttle this year’s general elections which was postponed from February to March and April, is said to be gaining momentum, following allegation by the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed that leaders of the PDP are planning a meeting with some military top brass on how to rig the election at all cost in favour of President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to PM News report, a military source at the 1 Division of the Nigerian Army in Kaduna confirmed that the Presidency is working hard and also using the opportunity of the postponement of the coming elections to rig back President Jonathan to Aso Rock in a do-or-die tactics.
The security source said: “A secret memo has been forwarded to all the heads of Divisions, Brigades and Battalions of the Nigerian Army across the country for a 3-day strategic meeting in Kaduna this week. The agenda of the meeting is on the coming elections and how to effectively use the military to intimidate voters especially in all the strong areas of the opposition across the country. Obasanjo Warns Against Coup, Declares Support for Buhari

Baba has finally taken his stand after refusing to join the campaign of Goodluck Jonathan for deceiving in 2010 that he would spend only six years in office if Baba Olusegun Obasanjo can support him to get the PDP ticket to complete the tenure of late President Umaru Yar'Adua.

Obasanjo has thus declared his support for the presidential candidate of the APC, Muhammadu Buhari.

Obasanjo, who is a member of the PDP, declared his support for Buhari during an interview with the Financial Times at the launch of his autobiography titled, ‘My Watch’, in Nairobi, Kenya.
Obasanjo said: “The circumstances he (Buhari) will be working under if he wins the elections are different from the one he worked under before, where he was both the executive and the legislature – he knows that. He is smart enough. He is educated enough. He’s experienced enough. Why shouldn’t I support him?”

Get Shoes & Go Back To Otuoke – David-West tells Jonathan

Professor Tam David-West, ex-Minister of Petroleum, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to start preparing his hand-over note because his days in office as president of Nigeria are numbered.

The reason, according to David-West, is because Jonathan’s party, the PDP will suffer a humiliating defeat in the hands of the fast moving train of the APC in the forthcoming general elections.
In the words of the Professor: “Jonathan should quickly look for shoes and go back to Otuoke. I have shoes in Ibadan and Abuja, I can give him some if he is in need of shoes.
Everywhere you go, you see signs that the end of this government, led by Jonathan, is very near. Honestly, I do not have anything against him, but a party and a man that can better manage Nigeria has appeared on the scene, and we have no choice but to save our country from an impending doom.”

Here is Buhari's Reaction to the Postponement of the Election

We Must Remain Calm But Resolute
Following the decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the 2015 general elections by six weeks, I wish to appeal for utmost restraint and calm by all Nigerians, especially the teeming supporters of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This postponement, which comes on the heels of the bogey of the National Security Adviser that half of the registered voters were being disenfranchised was exposed as a crude and fraudulent attempt to subvert the electoral process. The PDP administration has now engineered a postponement using the threat that security will not be guaranteed across the length and breadth of Nigeria because of military engagement in some states in the North East. It is important to note that although INEC acted within its constitutional powers, it is clear that it has been boxed into a situation where it has had to bow to pressure.

Kanye West Storms Grammys Stage after Beck Shocks by Beating Beyoncé to Best Album (Videos)

Kanye West launched into an epic rant on Beck and the organisers of the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, after Beck shockingly beat Beyonce to win the Album Of The Year.

At first, Kanye stormed the rocker on stage as he accepted his award in what appeared to be a remake of his 2009 stage ambush on Taylor Swift, when he told the audience Beyonce should have won over Taylor at the VMAs.

However, this time Kanye on getting to the stage decided against addressing the audience - which prompted many to think he was just poking fun at himself. Beyoncé and Jay Z’s reactions to the stunt too were priceless (See the videos after the cut). But backstage, things became a lot more heated.

Shekau vows to kill Our Soldiers within 6 weeks before election

Anytime the Nigerian Military comes out to declare that they want to finish Boko Haram members, Shekau will come out with his own stronger threat and, in most cases, he and his boys usually defeat our solders. In fact, in one of such encounters last year, he took over the home tome of the Chief of Defence Staff, CDS Alex Badeh, in broad daylight and nothing happened to him.

Are we going that way again this time? The military headquarters has vowed to crush Boko Haram in the next six weeks, the NSA has boasted that Shekau and his boys will be smoked out in six weeks.
And now Shekau has replied them in a new video, saying: “You send only 7,000 troops? Why don’t you send 70 million? This is small. Only 7,000? By Allah, it is small. We can seize them one-by-one. We can seize them one-by-one.” See his latest video below:

Suge Knight Rushed to Hospital after Suffering Panic Attack in Court

Suge Knight was rushed to a nearby hospital after suffering a panic attack today.

According to TMZ, Law enforcement sources say the call came in moments after the hearing Tuesday morning at L.A. County Superior Court and L.A. Fire Department and paramedics sent an ambulance to pick Suge up. Suge was in the lockup area next to the courtroom when he began
experiencing chest pains. But it appears it's not his heart ... it's his nerves.

This is the second time Knight has been taken to the hospital while in police custody -- he passed out in a jail cell last November as a result of a blood clot.

Suge pled not guilty. If convicted Suge faces life in prison for the death of friend Terry Carter.
