In Ivy League schools in Europe and America, Nigerians routinely outperform their peers from other nations

A Nigerian family, The Imafidons, have officially been named the smartest family in the UK. Prof. Chris Imafidon has been referred to as a world intellectual icon by Harvard Professor William Maxwell. Prof. Imafidon grew up in Nigeria.

Economic Recession & Ways You Can Avert The Effects

 

In economics, a recession is a negative growth for two consecutive quarters. For a layman's understanding, a recession is a period of general economic slow down. Recent information from the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the National Bureau of Statistics indicates that the Nigerian economy is at the verge of a recession.

Here are some of the effects of an economic recession:
1. Decrease in sales of goods and services, due to decreased finances available to individuals and families, the purchase of goods and services decline.

2. Increase in unemployment, due to decreased sales of goods and services by business owners and Companies , a reduction in the workforce takes place, leading to loss of jobs.

3. High inflation rate, Nigeria have been experiencing high inflation rate due to scarcity of foreign exchange, a weak Naira, high interest rates, poor electricity supply, dependence on importation and the high cost of doing business in Nigeria. As Nigeria goes into a recession the inflation rate will go higher as the above mentioned factors still persist.

4. Budget deficit in government spending, the National and States budgets will experience spending deficit due to shortfalls in government revenues. The government may decide on borrowing to cover for the fall in revenues, and this will increase the debt burden of the Federal and State Governments.

5. Decline in the stock market, investors would avoid investing in companies that might suffer loses, while some investors would pull their funds from the stock market.

6. Increase in crime rate, as life gets hard for many and living conditions get worse, crime rate will escalate. There will be increase in robberies, kidnapping, petty stealing, fraudulent schemes and other financial crimes.

7. Strained family relationships, as a result of unemployment, loss of income and high cost of living, inter-family relationships would come under strain which may lead to marital and family conflicts.

Families and individuals may not be able to avoid the effects of the coming economic recession, they can make changes that can improve their situations and help them prepare for the future, while waiting for the economy to recover. 

Advising The Nigerian Army Not To Massacre Any Community In The Niger Delta

This is a strong note of advise, short of a warning, to the Nigerian army to refrain from perpetrating any massacre on communities in the Niger Delta.
News reports of recent visits including currently, to Gbaramatu kingdom's Oporoza community call for an urgent and defined notice to the Nigerian army to restrain themselves and not perpetrate continued acts of terror on the people in these communities.

The reports of the army invading the communities and shooting randomly bring worry and fear to the observing community. While accounts of deaths if any are yet to be received, an army invasion firing at will in itself is an act of terror and can lead to inadvertent accidents and death and long term psychological damage. The elderly are at risk of debilitating fracture and resultant death from such acts of state terror.

Cocaine Almost Killed A Guy On Air, Plane Makes Emergency Landing In Lagos

An Emirates flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, made an emergency landing in Lagos at the weekend due to the deteriorating health condition of a suspected cocaine trafficker.

Screening by anti-narcotic officials found four passengers positive for drug ingestion. They are currently under interrogation. One of the suspects in critical health condition was immediately hospitalised as doctors are battling to save his life.

TRAGIC: Player of Plateau United FC Dies In Accident

                      
There is a wave of sorrow in the camp of Nigerian Football Professional League club, Plateau United, as the club lost one of its most promising midfielder, Shehu Sabole, in a ghastly road accident along the Jos-Kaduna road.


What is even more tragic about his death is that he died on his way to prepare for his own wedding which was scheduled to come up this Saturday (in six days time).

The club’s media officer, Mr Albert Dakup, said that Shehu was excused from Sunday’s game against Kano Pillars to go and prepare for his now aborted wedding ceremony. He decided to leave Jos for Kaduna on Sunday morning to meet with his parents about preparation for his wedding ceremony only for him to be involved in the ghastly accident that claimed his life.

Man Jailed 17yrs in UK for Armed Robbery after Victim Recognised Him on Facebook

                               
A Nigerian was on Monday jailed in the UK for 17 years after being convicted of robbery and unlawful weapons and firearms possession. 21yrs Omar Famuyide was caught following a two month violent crime spree when he was recognised by one of his victims on Facebook.


He was one of two men who burst into the Ambassador’s Relaxation Suite on 13 July last year and assaulted some women inside, threatening them with a metal bar and a handgun.


The pair fled the Florence Street venue in the city centre empty handed while firing a shot inside building. Nobody was seriously hurt. A month later he walked up to a man in Highgate, held a gun to his head and demanded the keys to his BMW. He then stole the car.

It was found two days later parked on a road in Edgbaston, along with a firearm which was examined and found to be the gun that fired a bullet at the relaxation suite a month earlier. Also found were keys to a Seat Leon, which was stolen by a man with a knife in Highgate same night the BMW was taken.

EgyptAir flight from Paris to Cairo confirmed to have crashed

Officials have confirmed that,the Egypt Air flight headed to Cairo from Paris late Wednesday crashed into the Mediterranean Sea halfway between Egypt and Greece.There we 66 aboard with 56 passengers including one child and two babies ,and 10 crew members.

EgyptAir later confirmed that one of the plane's emergency devices sent a distress signal approximately two hours after it vanished.
A search and rescue is currently on.

Man who trekked for Buhari says he regrets it..

Hashimu Suleiman who honoured president Buhari by trekking from Lagos to Abuja has expressed his displeasure at the situation of things in the country .He says he regrets embarking on that trek.According to Daily Post, he was quoted a saying.

Nigerians Caught With Cocaine At Cambodia Airport (Photos)

Two Nigerians were arrested at Phnom Penh International Airport for smuggling 1.27 kilograms of cocaine inside their bodies, according to the National Authority for Combating Drugs.

Okafor Ifeanyi Anthony and Adibe Paschal flew from Nigeria to Vietnam, via Qatar, and then to Cambodia, using Qatar Airways flight Q970 – the same flight taken by a Thai woman who was arrested with cocaine on April 1 this year.

Petrol Price Update: NUPENG and PENGASSAN Support The Presidency

Difference strokes for different folks. The two major unions in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector have endorsed the price modulation mechanism adopted by the Federal Government to arrive at the new N145 per litre pump price for premium motor spirit, popularly known as petrol.

The unions are the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers (NUPEN).

In a communique jointly issued by both unions, their national executive councils also called for stakeholder engagement by the government to further discuss issues pertaining how to reinvest the gains from the price modulation mechanism.

The communique reads in part:

“The NEC-in-session had an extensive discussion on the recent price modulation. The NEC-in-session is of the view that price deregulation has its benefits in the immediate and near future. However, the NEC-in-session strongly demands the Federal Government’s engagement with the stakeholders to work out a clear direction on how to reinvest the gains into the economy to cushion the effect of the price.”

The oil workers also stated that there was an urgent need for a paradigm shift and a new direction in the management of new investment and income in the oil and gas industry, but with critical provisions.

They stated that the government must ensure optimal performance of the existing refineries and also put in place machinery for the construction of new refineries in the country to ensure adequate production for domestic consumption and possibly export.

They also called for for “engagement of critical stakeholders for the Federal Government to provide a road map with timelines of the infrastructures it intend to embark upon with the proceeds from this price modulation to cushion the harsh effects of the new direction."

A housewife, Mrs Josephine Onwuzuruike and her secret lover, Ekene Onyeka, were on Thursday sentenced to death by hanging by Justice Benson Ogbuh of an Ebonyi State High Court.

Mrs. Onwuzuruike and Onyeka had in 2008, at Azuiyiokwu in Abakaliki, the state capital, butchered her husband and kept his body parts inside a cupboard. She claimed that she did it because her husband built another house other than the one they were living without her knowledge.

Just hours after receiving a cleaner copy of the 2016 budget, President Muhammadu Buhari has signed the document into law, signalling the commencement of work in all areas of the economy.

This is the first time Nigerians actually followed the details of our national Budget and ensured that all the so called cabals do not steal our money through padding and inclusion of frivolous projects.

 Perry's French Provincial mansion has sold for $17.5 million, breaking the record for the most expensive residential sale in Atlanta history. The site reports the previous highest sale in the city was a Buckhead estate that sold for $10.5 million in 2009.

The home, which hit the market last June, is nothing short of spectacular. Boasting a spa, home theater, infinity pool, and lighted tennis court, it's hard to see why Perry would want to move out.

Judge clears 81yrs old Man Wrongfully Convicted & Imprisoned for Murder 50 Years Ago

              

Just imagine how they wasted the life of an innocent black man, because of false accusations...
81-year-old Paul Gatling from Virginia was on Monday "exonerated" of murder that he was alleged to have committed about 52 years ago.

“There’s a lot of water gone under the bridge, but the bridge is still standing,” he said after the judgement.

Gatling was jailed 30 years to life in prison in October 1964 for the murder of one Lawrence Rothbort who was a Brooklyn artist. After spending 9 years, he was commutated by Governor Nelson Rockefeller thanks to lawyer, Malvina Nathanson from the Legal Aid Society; and was released in January 1974 on parole.

EFCC Arrests Former Governor Achike Udenwa

In it's quest to recover monies allegedly taken from the treasury for PDP campaign in 2015, the EFCC has arrested a former governor of Imo state, Achike Udenwa for collecting N350million, which is believed to be from the stolen arms fund through embattled ex-minister, Esther nenadi.

Nenadi was detained by the EFCC for allegedly receiving N2.5billion of the N4billion taken out of the CBN, on the orders of the Presidency ahead of the 2015 election. Udenwa is under interrogation.

Bunmi Davies To Debut New Sitcom "Jeka Play" May 31

          

Media personality Bunmi Davies is set to unveil his latest comedy project, a sitcom titled “Jeka Play” premiering on Tuesday May 31, 2016.

Named after popular UNILAG restaurant and hangout spot Jeka Play, which he owns, the sitcom is based on the interesting everyday events and happenings at Jeka Play, which is the epicenter of the UNILAG social scene. In Jeka Play, he reprises his role as the owner of the real life place as he encounters students, lecturers, cool kids and assorted regular patrons at the venue.

Commenting on the inspiration behind the show, Bunmi Davies remarked:


“My experience of running Jeka Play at Unilag has been a very interesting one because by nature of the kind of venue it is and the campus environment around, we get some really interesting characters coming in all the time and there is never a dull moment with them around. From the genuinely beautiful girls and guys to the 'I must belong by force' students, right down to the aristos, not forgetting the student politicians with good, bad and funny motives, and of course a few randy lecturers. It occurred to me that these everyday comedic experiences at Jeka Play should be promoted to a wider audience thus the idea for the sitcom was born”.

The show also features cameo appearances from popular Yoruba movie actor, Hafeez Oyetoro aka Saka, Wazobia FM Presenter, Nedu, amongst others.

It will be recalled that prior forays into comedy by Bunmi Davies include Stand Up Nigeria, a platform for upcoming stand-up comedians to showcase their talents and gain exposure.
